Meet the Artist

A woman with curly dark hair standing barefoot in a room, wearing a colorful striped maxi dress, holding a yellow cloth with lemon patterns, with framed pictures and decor on the wall behind her.

I’m Rachel, the artist behind Rachel Hiemer Studio based in Charlotte, NC!

I started this passion project at the end of 2020 hoping to find a creative outlet starting out mostly in digital formats. Since then, I have expanded my practice to include block printmaking, which is a skill I was first exposed to in school.

Throughout my portfolio, you’ll see animals, plants, and fungi showcased as most of my work is heavily inspired by the outside world and building a more sustainable future. I try to encapsulate the simple beauties of nature that we often take for granted in such a fast-paced society. My work uses expressive lines and shapes to reflect the unpolished natural world as opposed to the sharp and perfected forms in the man-made. I create with the hope of inspiring people to see the beauty we have around us and strive to protect it rather than continuously erase or cause damage.

My story

I am a self-taught artist, that is constantly trying new things and hoping to advance my creative skills. Most of my illustrations are done digitally on my iPad using procreate and Adobe Illustrator. I also create linocut prints that are all drawn, carved, and burnished by hand without use of a press. I hope to be able to add a press to my toolkit soon, but for now a wooden spoon works wonders.

This medium follows a process I find extremely exciting and challenging. The steps from the original drawing, to seeing the image slowly appear on a block that will be carefully inked and printed help further drive this idea of slowing down to enjoy what is around us.
